a. Who is credited for Hawthorne Studies?
Harvard psychologist, Elton Mayo is credited for Hawthorne Studies.

b. Write a definition of organization.
Organizations are collections of interacting and inter related human and non-human resources working toward a common goal or set of goals within the framework of structured relationships. In organization there should be Social entity , Composition of people or groups of people, Working interdependently, interact with each other in a structured manner.

c. What is Total Quality Management?
Total Quality Management (TQM) refers to management methods used to enhance quality and productivity in organizations, particularly businesses. TQM is a comprehensive system approach that works horizontally across an organization, involving all departments and employees and extending backward and forward to include both suppliers and clients/customers.

d. Write down the function of HRM.
There are four functions of HRM and they are as follows;

  • Acquisition: It involves the employment of the right number and right kind of workforce to the right job at the right time
  • Development: This ensures proper competencies of employee to handle jobs
  • Utilization: This ensures willingness of employees for increasing productivity by doing jobs effectively.
  • Maintenance: It ensures retention of employees in the organization

e. What do you understand by Principle of Unity of Command?
Principle of Unity of Command states that one employee should have only one boss. Multiple bosses weaken discipline, divide loyalty, create conflicts and undermine authority.

f. List three advantages of Line and Staff Organization.
Line and staff organization is the combination of functional & line organization. Three advantages of Line and staff organization are as follows;

  • Expert Advice
  • Specialization
  • Effective control

g. Write any three Hygiene Factors as described in Herzberg’s Motivation Hygiene Theory.
Hygiene factor is also known as dissatisfaction or maintenance factor. Any three Hygiene Factors as described in Herzberg’s Motivation Hygiene Theory are as follows;

  • Company policies and administration
  • Supervision
  • Working conditions

h. What is conflict?
Conflict refers to all kind of opposition between or among individual and groups. Conflict mainly arises from disagreements over the goals and methods, differences over the interpretations of facts, personality differences, and even due to the poor communication

i. What is control?
Control is a process of measuring the actual performance achieved with that of planned performance and taking corrective action if actual performance is not in accordance with planned performance.

j. What can be understood by ‘9,9’ in explaining Managerial Grid Theory?
In Managerial Grid Theory ‘9,9’ is Team / Democratic style. It is the best style according to this model. It shows a maximum concern for both production and people.
